Metamorphosis is a process of transformation of a thing or person into something different. This view is supported by reviewing the novel by Franz Kafka, metamorphosis, in the essay below. Gregor Samsa wakes up transformed into a beetle. Prior to his transformation, Gregor led a normal life of routine boring daily activities of being a salesman and providing for his family. The realization of his present condition is what triggers the change and his role in the household comes into focus. He realizes that his family is increasingly dependent on him while they do so little to be productive. Finally, he comes to discover that he has been serving as an insect all his life (Hawes 12).
Human beings are dependent on their environment, finances, and their status in society as depicted in Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis. When our surroundings change, we are forced to change and adapt to our new environment. At first, Gregor does not accept change as he tries to wake up and go to work ‘” O God,” he thought, “what a demanding job I’ve chosen! Considering his current condition, Gregor’s motivation to work is his family’s dilemma of paying debts. He cannot function if he cannot go to work. His position to control the family is dependent on his income while they rely on his income. Once he is unable to work, he loses his family’s dependency and everything that made Gregor functional is lost (Hawes 20).
No longer in control, the family has to adapt to a new realization and begins to function without him. Their productivity is renewed without Gregor as they realize they have to work to earn money for their daily needs. The turn of events makes Gregor dysfunctional while the family transforms to functional, beginning to flourish with his deterioration. In the process of their family function they begin to sideline Gregor, “Who could find time in this overworked and tired-out family to bother about Gregor more than was absolutely necessary?” Thus grows weaker in time as the family reforms. His transformation was adamant for his family to transform while Gregor finally dies (Hawes 28).

The Samsa family is more productive than Gregor because they are self-dependent by the time of his death. It may also be argued that his death occurred when he took up the role of providing for his family even before he changed forms. His existence was only important while he provided his paycheck. His family seemingly undergoes metamorphosis through Gregor. They view their improvement, with Gregor’s dysfunction, as holding them back. From the text, we can derive that Gregor’s metamorphosis was his transformation while his transformation was his family’s metamorphosis (Hawes 42).
Samsa family characters represent the status in which today’s society has placed on dependency to their resources. A resource is as good and practical as it is provisional. Franz wrote his fiction at a time when the world was undergoing a transformation into modernity. It captures the anxiety of the modern age with the emergence of dependency as a factor for change. Human feelings are depicted as inadequate and their needs overtake their display of guilt and isolation towards others. Samsa family is a perfect example of realities in the world, within the family and society.
CONCLUSION
Human beings are known to be dependent on their environment, finances, and their status. This is depicted in Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis. We have to be flexible as changes come and go while others pop up. When our surroundings change, we are forced to change and adapt to our new environment. Samsa family characters represent the status in which today’s society has placed on dependency on their resources. Human feelings are depicted as inadequate and their needs overtake their display of guilt and isolation towards others.
